Vascular and Interventional Specialists of Alabama - Plantar Fascia Embolization

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fascia Embolization (PFE) is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that treats chronic heel pain (plantar fasciitis) by blocking abnormal blood vessels feeding the area. An interventional radiologist uses imaging to guide a catheter to the foot's arteries, injecting tiny particles to obstruct problematic vessels, allowing the fascia to heal naturally. Once blood flow is reduced to the irritated tissue, inflammation calms and pain is reduced. PFE has a quick recovery offering an alternative to surgery for those who have not found relief through conservative methods.

How Plantar Fascia Embolization Works

Plantar Fascia Embolization (PFE) is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that targets the underlying source of chronic heel pain. When the plantar fascia is under stress for a long time, it can develop a network of abnormal, tiny blood vessels. These vessels bring inflammatory cells to the area, causing persistent pain and preventing the tissue from healing properly.

PFAE Plantar Fascia Pain

The PFE procedure works by blocking these abnormal blood vessels. An interventional radiologist makes a tiny pinhole incision, usually in the foot, and uses advanced imaging to guide a microcatheter (a tube thinner than a strand of spaghetti) directly to the source of inflammation. Tiny, biocompatible particles are then injected through the catheter to block the abnormal blood flow. This reduces inflammation, alleviates pain, and allows the plantar fascia to begin its natural healing process.

Am I a Candidate for Plantar Fascia Embolization?

Plantar Fascia Embolization may be an excellent treatment option if you suffer from chronic heel pain and have not found relief with conservative treatments. You may be a good candidate for PFE if you:

  • Have experienced heel pain for more than 6 months.
  • Have tried conservative treatments like stretching, icing, orthotics, physical therapy, or injections without lasting success.
  • Experience sharp, stabbing pain in your heel, especially in the morning or after periods of rest.
  • Find that your pain limits your ability to stand, walk, or participate in daily activities.
  • Are looking for a non-surgical alternative to open surgery.

A consultation with one of our interventional radiologists is the best way to determine if PFE is the right choice for your specific condition. We will review your medical history, imaging, and previous treatments to create a personalized care plan.
